Quick updates:

Dashan Coram (of Huggabroomstik) has recorded an amazing new Secret Salamander record called Beebles that RiYL will be putting out. Not only are the songs his best yet (hear two of them over in the socialism section) but the record was recorded by Major Matt Mason USA and features a million awesome guests, including members of The Wowz, The Baby Skins, The Jeffrey Lewis Band, Schwervon!, Dufus, The Moldy Peaches, American Anymen, Art Sorority 4 Girls and Huggabroomstik. Beebles will likely be the first in a series of micro-pressings that we hope to integrate in alongside our regularly-pressed material (ie, smaller runs with less conventional packaging!)

In mid-January, Chris Maher will be flying West to the Seattle / Olympia / Portland area with the wonderful Phoebe Kreutz in order to have fun and play some shows. The two are currently suring up dates, but will definitely be hitting Portland on January 17th. Ideally, by these shows, Chris's first EP, tentatively titled, Epigram on the Death of a Feeling, will be ready for consumption in some form or another. The EP, being released by Luv-A-Lot Records, is currently in production. Stay tuned for more info on that.

Unfortunately, Daggerhearts will no be playing Poughkeepsie tonight. Bummer.

[12.2.04]

Nice words! The wonderful website Left Off The Dial gave the Morningsides a lovely review. Read the whole thing HERE. Remember: It and the new Fugue 7" are both available for $4 ppd over in the CAPITALISM section. Get 'em while they're hot!!

In a bit of bad news, Daggerhearts have been forced off of the Le Tigre show due to the silly demands of Le Tigre's manager. Everyone on our side of things is totally bummed and we're all slightly disillusioned by this move which seems to directly contradict Le Tigre's politics. Daggerhearts may still play Poughkeepsie that same night, so stay tuned here for updates.

[11.29.04]

GUT CHECK TIME: The Fugue's beautiful, bumble-bee-colored, Seripop-designed 'Four Corner Races' 7" is finally available. Three songs, recorded by Adam Kendall and mastered by Alan Douches, ready to blow up your speakers. Get yr own copy over in the CAPITALISM section or buy one at an upcoming Fugue show. RADDD.

[11.28.04]

The new issue of Big Takeover, with Wilco on the cover and a review of the Wowz's Long Grain Rights and Nicotine Bubble Gum on the inside, is now out! Besides the rad Wowz review on page 266 ("Stylistically, The WoWz hark back to '60s sounds - Dylan on the dark imagery and acoustic, ramshackle 'When I Die'; a scruffier, folkier Hollies on 'He Wanders' - but with a deliberate lack of polish that's very modern."), the mag features the first ever RiYL / Luv-A-Lot print ad on page 301!! Cool.

[11.26.04]

We switched to a new server today, so if you find anything that's broken, send us an email!! Thanks...

[11.25.04]

(CR)HAPPY THANKSGIVING! (For, like, vegetarians and stuff). Today, in RiYL land, tofurkey and potatoes will be eaten and wine will be consumed. The Morningsides and the Wowz got the lead-off single and album reviews in the November Edition of England's Tasty Fanzine. Pretty cool, no? Of the Morningsides, they said: "If ever someone had distilled the essence of summer and pressed it on to a slab of vinyl, this is it. Top class summer pop, for these cold winter nights." Of the Wowz, they said: "[Long Grain Rights] is a joy to hear... and it contains some of the best quirky pop you will hear this year. Well Done."

The Morningsides also got a nod from trakMARX.com, who said: "NYC's the Morningsides play 60s garage rock with the emphasis on 50s rock n roll & early Dylan... 'Summer Song' sounds like Pavement sing Dylan. These boys piss all over the Kings Of Leon - & there are NO - repeat after me - NO - moustaches. Result."

In other news, rumor has it the Fugue's "Four Corner Races" single will be available here this coming Tuesday... Stay tuned.

[11.20.04]

DAMN: RiYL bands go show crazy. Not only are DAGGERHEARTS opening for LE TIGRE and RATATAT at Vassar College on December 4th, but the Fugue are embarking on an extensive tour to support the release of the "Four Corner Races" 7". Check out the shows section for the full scoop!

[10.27.04]

My Space, Your Space, Our Space, Outer Space: RiYL is now on MySpace and you can hear exclusive JAMZZ from current and upcoming releases by going here: RiYL Space. You don't need to be a member of My Space to hear these songs (but if you are a member, add us as your friend!) Its like the second coming of MP3.com (only tackier). Rad.

[10.26.04]

First of all, with the election a week away, DON'T FORGET TO VOTE... Especially those of you who will be voting in swing states!!! We can't afford another four years of Karl Rove and his cronies George W. Bush, Dick Cheney, John Ashcroft and Donald Rumsfeld. We've had enough of their evil already.

Now onto less-serious business: We've gotten a few new reviews as of late. Punk Planet gave the Morningsides a thumbs up in their new issue: "Rocking pop in the vein of Pavement if Pavement were more influenced by early Rolling Stones... A highly enjoyable release." The Wowz also got a wonderful review in the Columbia University Spectator last week: "Long Grain Rights is a folk-rock album reminiscent of Bob Dylan, with quirky, off-key Beach Boys harmonies and a lilting, tipsy pop sensibility reminiscent of early Beatles songs... This album is a gem no matter what sort of music you're into." There's also a review of Long Grain Rights and Nicotine Bubble Gum appearing in the upcoming issue of The Big Takeover: "The WoWz hark back to '60s sounds - Dylan on the dark imagery and acoustic, ramshackle 'When I Die'; a scruffier, folkier Hollies on 'He Wanders' -- but with a deliberate lack of polish that's very modern. The creaks and cracks in this music make it go down roughly, but they're what make it interesting." Way to go!!

[10.18.04]

Dudez!! The Fugue's Mysterious Animals EP has been mastered by Alan Douches and it sounds amazing. You can hear a sneak preview of "Whale Egg" over at MySpace.com: MUZIK. And, you've been anxiously waiting... Fugue and Pathways singles finally hatching in early November...

Oh! And we'll be releasing the 12" version of Genghis Tron's Cloak of Love EP sometime around March. It will be a split release with the new Glitter Pals label, Lovepump United. The CDEP will be out first on Crucial Blast in January. Wicked.

[10.12.04]

How did a month go by with no updates? Crazy. So what's been up? First, we've got a friend helping out with the label. Please welcome Karina Czoka to the fold! She'll be helping with the day-to-day as well as heading up the press and promotions side of things for the next few months. We're glad to have her involved!! Rock it, K-chan.

Glitter Pals recently finished recording their first EP, Unleash the Compassion, with producer Martin Bisi. Its just under ten minutes of sonic brilliance. Cuz RiYL wouldn't be able to put the record out until the Spring, Glitter Pals Mookie and Jake have decided to start their own imprint to release the project. SWEET!! The more, the merrier! As an added bonus, we get to include the exclusive, Bisi-recorded song, "Aluminum Bat Bomb", on the upcoming RiYL Compilation. Killaaa.

The Wowz continue to play more shows than we can count. Check the shows section for new Wowz dates (including one at Sin-e) and some other upcoming RiYL-related dates. The response to Long Grain Rights has been extremely positive. Find out why: CAPITALISM.

Daggerhearts' Tori recently relocated from Philly to Baltimore, MD. She and Dirck are working on new Daggerhearts material. Cool! Likewise, the Pathways have regrouped as a five(?)-piece, with two new members. Expect the debut performance of the new lineup in November (coinciding with the release of the long-delayed "Productivity" 7")! Oh, and the preliminary artwork for the Boat of Confidence LP looks spectacular! We can't wait to see all of it.

The Fugue's Mysterious Animals is at West West Side being mastered by Alan Douches. We can't wait to hear the results!!! The "Four Corner Races" 7" is at the pressing plant and should be available here soon.

Oh, and Chris Maher's website has finally been revamped. Check out the new, minimalist design here: www.chrismaher.net.

More news soon?

[9.10.04]

The folks over at Splendid wrote some nice words about the Morningsides single. Here's an excerpt of the review: "The Morningsides know that music based on honesty and a who-gives-a-fuck attitude is far more interesting and endearing than playing by the rules." To read the whole thing, click HERE.

[9.03.04]

Woah. Our second release is out!! Buy the Wowz' (and RiYL's) first full length, Long Grain Rights, over in the capitalism section!! Do it!!!!

We've been sleeping on this bit of news for a while but it seems high time to announce it: Recommended If You Like Records will be releasing the upcoming Fugue EP, Mysterious Animals, this coming January. We've heard the new songs live and they're just unreal. Seripop will again be designing the cover, so not only will it SOUND great, but it'll LOOK great, too. Start the New Year's countdown...

Our friends in Finer Things, who appear on the upcoming RiYL Compilation, have a brand new website. You can check it out at finerthingsmusic.com. They're also opening for the pop-alicious Pas/Cal at Sin-E towards the end of the month and you can buy tickets HERE. See you there?

Oh. We've been pregnant for months and it seems as though we're finally showing. The Wowz record will be here shortly and its little 7" brothers and sisters won't be too far behind.

[8.8.04]

Folks!!! (Get it?) Chris Maher will be the penultimate performer at this year's Fortified Records sponsored Antifolk Fest at the Sidewalk Café. He'll be playing at midnight on Saturday, August 21st, just before Lance Romance. Also on the bill are Narnack's Langhorne Slim, Just About To Burn (feat. Paleface, Breadfoot and Monica from Huggabroomstik), the Woes (nope, not the Wowz...), Joie DBG and more... To celebrate the occasion, we've added a brand new demo of "mE=MC²" to the socialism section. Enjoy!

[8.3.04]

Kiddies: The Fugue are playing downstairs at Northsix on August 12th with Shat and Wires on Fire. You can (and should) buy tickets HERE. Also, why don't you wander over to the message board and shoot the shit about Saturday's show or whatever else is on your mind: RiYL MESSAGE BORED!?! [8.1.04]

How in the world is it August already? Time flies when yr having funnnn: Last night was Recommended If You Like Records Night at Galapagos (aka the RiYL-Super-Summer-Jamz-Dance-Party) and it was completely radical. Galapagos was packed and every band was in top form.

Things got started with a few quieter songs by Chris Maher and ended with an explosive set from the Fugue. In between, the crowd went nuts for the reunited Daggerhearts, dug new songs by Glitter Pals, saw the second to last Pathways set with original drummer Pete Shanel, wintessed the second electric set by the Wowz and were treated to an unannounced appearance by the Morningsides.

Nick and Alex from Automato also kept things fun in between sets by spinning some excellent tunes. Things couldn't have gone much better... Below are some pictures from the show (if you've got more or any audio/video, send us an email at info@riylrecords.com):

Andrew of Automato rocking his signed(!?!!?) copy of REC001:

Chris Maher kicks things off:

The Morningsides sing summer songs:

The Wowz go electric:

The Pathways' second-to-last Shanel hurrah:

Glitter Pals dream team:

Daggerhearts unite:

The Fugue rock yr brains out:

Thanks again to everyone who came to the show and everyone who helped make this a success!!! As long as you keep having fun, we'll keep doing this...

[7.19.04]

Haha, we're on Friendster. To be our friend, search for "RiYL Records Poughkeepsie" or the email address "info at riyl records dot com" (only replace the "at" with "@" and "dot" with "."). Oh, and everyone thank Ian for designing such an amazing poster for the Galapagos show. Thanks Ian!!!! Tentacles are cool.

[7.14.04]

Yes kidz, they're back. Its with a great amount of excitement and anticipation that we proudly announce the first Daggerhearts show in over a year. Cancel your plans and mark yr calendars because you don't want to miss this:

Saturday, July 31st at 8pm: Recommended If You Like Records Night at Galapagos, featuring everyone on the label...

DISCOMBOBULATED

More news soon...

[6.29.04]

Hey ev'ryone! The Morningsides got a nice review yesterday over at IndiePages.com! Here's an abbreviated version for your reading pleasure:

"This is the debut release for both the band and the label, and a good start for each. ['Summer Song' is] a rockin' tune that you'd swear came from Canada... On the flip is 'A Mole Hill Is A Mound', a much quieter song with brushed drums and bells, that sounds almost like a 50s ballad. A fine debut... Let's hope to hear more like this soon! MTQ=2/2."

To read the full review, click HERE. We're almost through the first 100 copies, so if you want a copy, you might wanna grab one now over in the CAPITALISM section. Stay tuned for the news on the upcoming releases from the Fugue, the Pathways, the Wowz and Daggerhearts!!

[6.16.04]

FYI: The shows section is now chock full of new RiYL-related dates and the disco section has been stocked with info on our first eight releases (REC001 - REC008). Check 'em out! Also, newly mastered tracks from the Pathways' (incredible) full length, Boat of Confidence, have been added to the socialism section. The album won't be released until late-Summer, so do yourselves a favor and download these now!

[6.9.04]

Hey all!!! The Morningsides' Single Release Party at Sidewalk this Saturday Night (11pm) got a nice review in the new Time Out New York. Read it for yrself:

"The Wowz's Sam Grossman and Johnny Dydo join songwriter Chris Maher in the Morningsides, a quirky trio that will celebrate the release of its debut seven-inch tonight (Recommended If You Like Records). The album's two antifolk ditties wouldn't sound out of place on the Rushmore soundtrack. The Wowz and Maher will play both separately and together tonight."

Needless to say, we're stoked. Since our first single has now received some deserving press, we thought you might like to see what else we've got brewing here at RiYL Records. Below are the covers of two of our upcoming singles, the Pathways' Productivity 7" (designed by the talented John Finneran) and the Fugue's Four Corner Races 7" (designed by Canadian superstars Seripop):

And, while we're at it, here are the preliminary covers for the two first CD releases on RiYL, the first RiYL Comp and the Wowz full length, Long Grain Rights:

Don't miss the Morningsides record release party at Sidewalk Cafe this Saturday night, June 12th (or the Bar Matchless show at 9pm tomorrow night)!!

[5.26.04]

[5.18.04]

Today is an historic day for us here at Recommended If You Like Records. It was a long time coming, but our first release, the Morningsides debut single (produced by Walter Martin of the Walkmen), is now OFFICIALLY AVAILABLE! You can order yourself a copy (or two?) in the capitalism section (through PayPal!). The single is a limited run (on colored vinyl, no less), so get 'em while they're hot! For a clip of the A Side, "Summer Song", head over to the socialism section. We're happy and giddy and super excited for everything to come... STAY TUNED!

[5.6.04]

Hello, hello! Lots of changes to the upcoming release schedule... all of it is almost confirmed, but there are a few loose ends still left to be tied. Check out the tentative list of releases at the disco. We now have plans to release a real (RiYL?) full-length compilation documenting artists related to RiYL through Poughkeepsie and the surrounding area. It sounds and looks great so far. Get excited.

We're gonna be releasing the Wowz record, Long Grain Rights, and so we've added two tracks from that album to the socialism section. There's also a new video clip of Chris Maher and the Post-Modern Lovers. Finally, there's a bunch of new show dates in the shows section, so be sure to check those out. More info it becomes available...

[4.20.04]

HEY! This isn't about RiYL, but it's about our family: The self-titled DFA-produced debut by our brothers in AUTOMATO was released today by Coup De Grace / Capitol. Go out and pick it up!! (Or stay home and order it here.) It will shwang you like nobody's business. Congradulations, guys.

[4.19.04]

THE PATHWAYS at BARD! TONIGHT! With OF MONTREAL!! 7:30pm! See you there?

We figured you'd be interested in seeing what the Morningsides single artwork looks like. Dig it:

More soon...

[4.4.04]

Delays? Yeah, both REC000 (the FunPak sampler) and REC001 (the Morningsides 7") have been pushed back again due to artwork complications. As a result, REC002 (Daggerhearts' Sissy Boy EP 7") has also been moved back a few weeks. But fear not!! These delays will only result in better records for YOU. Yay!!

In other news, its now confirmed that REC004 will be the Fugue's debut 7". The platter will feature "Four Corner Races" (taken from their as-yet unreleased Muscle EP) in addition to two great songs that won't appear on the EP. Get pumped. As a super-special added bonus, Canada's Seripop will be designing the artwork. WOWOWOWWOW!

The Pathways have sent us the rough mixes of their upcoming full-length (REC006) and damn, its a winner. You kids will flip your lids when you get your hands on it in late Summer. Get a sneak preview when they open for Of Montreal at Bard in a few weeks, or at any of their upcoming NYC shows.

Finally, there's been some talk of the WoWz releasing a full-length on RiYL sometime this year. The band features 2/3rds of the Morningsides (Sam Grossman and John Dydo) along with Simon Beins. More on that to come. And speaking of which, don't forget to catch the last 1/3 of the Morningsides, Chris Maher, opening up for Mike Doughty at Vassar this Thursday, April 8th.

More news soon...

[3.18.04]

QUICK UPDATE: We're fucking thrilled to reveal that we're close to confirming NYC's finest, The Fugue, for the REC004 release. Details will arrive shortly. Until then, check the shows section for Fugue dates.

[3.17.04]

RiYL Grows Some Balls. Check the SOCIALISM section for the debut recording from POK/NYC's Glitter Pals. Then, check out the SHOWS section for the date of their first NYC performace at the Knitting Factory. Rock.

[3.16.04]

Hey! Our release schedule is coming into focus. Tonight, Bob and I went out to dinner with Evan and David of the Pathways and discussed plans for the upcoming Pathways releases. We agreed that the REC003 7" will come out in May with the songs "Productivity", "You've Got To Look Inside Yourself" and, most likely, "Bruchstück Eins". The exciting news is that that release willl be followed by either an EP or a full-length Pathways release in August or September. Evan and David slipped us a CD with some of the new recordings and they sound super-tacular. (Feel like adding your two cents as to which we should release? Skip on over to the message board.)

With the Pathways situation fairly set, we can now announce a July release date for the second Daggerhearts record, the Ugly Girl 7" EP. What?!?! TWO forthcoming Daggerhearts EPs? Yes, folks, it's true. Check out the socialism section for tracks from both of those releases. Wooo!! Last but not least, the as-yet-unannounced 4th RiYL release, REC004, will probably be out in June. Though the exact contents of the release haven't been set in stone, we promise it'll be a doozy.

In some less-than-stellar news, the release date for REC001 has again been pushed back, due to the difficulty (and cost!) of silk-screening the covers. We've decided to scrap that plan and so we're now back to the design phase, since we've got to re-adjust certain things for offset printing. That said, we hope to make those available as early as March 23rd and no later than March 30th. The RiYL FunPak, or REC000, has also been pushed back, but only because we'll now be including even more great music (including new contributions from Moses Gunn, Glitter Pals and Yoko Kikuchi, among others). Cool! I guess that's all for now?

love,
Chris

[3.11.04]

Message bored? Then go to the RiYL MESSAGE BOARD! Thanks are due to Nico Foley, who has graciously hosted and set-up the board on his server. Go check it out, sign up and get bored! (For now, a link to the board will be in the connect section, until we find a more appropriate place...)

You'll also notice that we've now got new graphics at the top of every page. Thoughts? Suggestions? (Wait... that's what the MESSAGE BOARD is for!!!) So yeah, dig it all, and get excited for REC001, which will be out in a matter of days!

(Plus, check out the shows section for new dates featuring RiYL artists sharing bills with M. Doughty and Xiu Xiu, among others.)

[3.9.04]

Wanna buy a button and a sticker? They're available now in the capitalism section for only $1.00 ppd. Soon, they'll also be available as part of the RiYL FunPak, so stay tuned. (And of course, you can always get buttons and stickers at upcoming RiYL shows!)

[3.6.04]

Guess who got 500 copies of the debut single by the Morningsides in the mail this past Thursday? WE DID!!!! Yes folks, the first Recommended If You Like Records single has arrived!!! Assuming the artwork gets completed this week, we'll begin selling the single for $4.00 ppd starting on Tuesday, March 16th through our online PayPal store (shortly thereafter, the RiYL FunPak will also be made available).

See the single for yourself:

In other news, the tracklisting for the first Daggerhearts release, Sissy Boy EP 7", has been finalized. Check the Disco section for details. We've also decided to postpone plans for the RiYL Comp, Recommended If You Like Music, which was originally going to be REC005. It may get released sometime in late 2004 or early 2005, but for now, work on that release has stopped entirely (though some of the tracks intended for the comp will now appear on the RiYL FunPak Sampler). But fear not, we've got other exciting releases to release out instead. Speaking of which, everything is on schedule to release a the first Pathways 7" in mid-to-late May. Get excited?

[2.23.04]

The test pressings for the Morningsides single have arrived! Rejoice! Assuming all three sound good, we'll be calling URP tomorrow to give the green-light for the full run. The Daggerhearts master will be going out to the plant for mastering and plating soon, followed by the Pathways single... Here's to making records!

[2.8.04]

Beware: Numerous website updates! Check out the Socialism section for a new Daggerhearts MP3, two new Pathways MP3s, a Pathways video clip and photos of the Pathways and Chris Maher. Also, check out the Links for lots of super cool new places to go. The Discography has been updated, as well. Which brings us to our next bit of news...

The Pathways have informed us that they're hard at work on new songs for the upcoming REC003 7". The plan, as it stands now, is to release a 3-song 7" with the tune "Party's Over" as the A-Side. They've got a few other tracks up their sleeve, for the 7" and the first RiYL Compilation, Recommended If You Like Music (due out this summer).

Last but not least, this past Friday night, when they shared a bill at Vassar College, Mr. Dave "D-Lo" Longstreth and Chris "F'n" Maher discussed the possibility of releasing a Dirty Projectors 7" on Recommended If You Like. Though Dave mused that seven inches are "a great way to lose money", he appeared into the idea nonetheless. But wait kids, don't get too excited, this is still only in the discussion phase...

[2.4.04]

ITS OFFICAL. Recommended If You Like Records is now officially in the business of making records. Today, I sent out the master for the first RiYL release, REC001 (the Morningsides' "Summer Song b/w A Mole Hill Is A Mound" 7"), to United Record Pressing in Nashville, TN. Within a week and a half, I should have the test pressings in hand, with the actual records following about two weeks later. Artwork for the single is still being finalized, but this is still very exciting news - the ball is rolling!! For some reason, I assumed this day would never come... but maybe its best not to count my chickens before they hatch (into nice little 7" circles of colored vinyl?).

In other news, the folks at StickerGuy.com have informed us that our stickers should be printed and in the mail by now. Assuming this is true, they will be available shortly. As for REC002, we're still waiting on the Daggerhearts master to arrive from France - the original copy that was sent to us a few weeks ago got cracked somewhere between Paris and Poughkeepsie. Once the new copy arrives, however, work on that release, as well as the REC000 Sampler, will recommence and the tracklistings for both will be finalized. Stay tooned?

Love,
Chris

[1.23.04]

Quick update! The Pathways have agreed to work on a 7" to put out on Recommended If You Like Records. We couldn't be happier. To celebrate the occasion, we've added one of their songs to the Socialism section. We've also added a song from Colin Kindley (brother of the Pathways' Evan Kindley!), which you should go download now. We'll be working with Colin in the future, as well. Adios amigos.

[01.20.04]

Happy belated New Year! Things are going along swimmingly here at RiYL, as we're gearing up for our first two releases. To allow for more logistical planning and more time to prepare the artwork for our first two records, we've decided to push the release dates of REC001 and REC002 back to March and April, respectively. If everything goes well at the pressing plant, the release dates may get bumped up.

In other news, we've been talking to our friends in the superb band, the Pathways, about releasing a couple of their songs on a 7". Though its not confirmed, this may end up being REC003.

We received our first shipment of buttons(!) today. They look pretty. They'll be available in the Capitalism section soon as part of a RiYL fun pack, or REC000. In it, you'll get a CDR sampler, a button and a sticker for one very low price. News on that to come...

Until then, take her easy.

[12.28.03]

Welcome to the brand new home of Recommended If You Like Records. As of today, we've entered the first public testing phase of our site. Please be kind and hold your horses while we work out the kinks... we'll be operational shortly. If you come across anything that doesn't work, or you have design and/or content suggestions, feel free to send an email to info@riylrecords.com.

2004 looks promising: Our first two releases will be out in the beginning of the year. Our first release will be REC001, the Morningsides debut 7" (recorded by Walter Martin at Marcata Recording), followed by REC002, a double-7" Daggerhearts EP. Also in the works (for a Summer 2004 release) is the first RiYL Compilation, Recommended If You Like Music, which will (most likely) feature previously unavailable tunes from the Morningsides, Daggerhearts, Sam Grossman, Yoko Kikuchi, Discombobulated, the Johns, Chris Maher, Huggabroomstik, Colin Kindley and more.

Also, in the the near future, we hope to have some MP3s by some friends of ours in the Socialism section. Please check back for that... In the mean time, put on your dancing shoes and get funky.

love,
Chris
