CHRIS MAHER - "Love" (Married Media)
"Love is a theory, it doesn't really exist," posits New York City native Chris Maher on his aptly titled debut single, "Love." The song, a staple of his playful solo sets, gets full band treatment here and the result sounds a bit like Elvis Costello covering Jonathan Richman if he'd fronted The Band in 1969. The lyrics present an interesting twist on the usual story of young love: An uncertain male protagonist tries to determine the intentions of his unsentimental female lover, who denies very existence of love.
"Love" precedes Maher's first record, due out later this year. It was recorded in Brooklyn, New York with Mark Ospovat (Jeffrey Lewis, Wooden Wand, Meneguar) and mixed by Kyle "Slick" Johnson (Cymbals Eat Guitars, So So Glos, Neighbors). Mr. Maher produced it himself.
