I Hate Myself and I Want To Die  ///  March 10, 2006 04:13 PM  ///  dispatch from Chris!

Leave it to The Fugue to go and cover one of my all-time favorite Nirvana tracks, “I Hate Myself and I Want to Die”. The Nirvana version, which was originally intended as the title-track of the album that became In Utero, first appeared on 1993’s otherwise shitty Beavis and Butt-Head Experience compilation. The Fugue’s version, recorded in anticipation of their first Northwest tour, is an obnoxiously raucous banger that pays perfect tribute to the satirical Nirvana original. Fugue frontman Joe Somar corrupts the (brilliantly) awkward melody, further garbles the already-garbled lyrics and uses his signature howl to make Cobain’s scream seem almost tame. The rest of the band adds plenty of orgasmically obnoxious feedback, appropriately sloppy backing vocals and a startlingly spastic saxophone part. Wait... Saxophone in a Nirvana song? Cobain’s ashes are moshing in their urn.
